The Band

In February of 1970, four young hippies walked into Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California and the rest is music and cultural history.

LoveSong’s music and the music of a few other emerging pioneering Christian artists would revolutionize popular music, create a new music genre, and become the driving force behind what Time magazine would call, “The Jesus Revolution”. LoveSong would become the first Christian band of renown, set new Christian music recording standards, help shatter the glass ceiling of what was acceptable to be played in church, and create a musical legacy that endures to this day.

Chuck Girard

Chuck Girard, singer, songwriter, recording artist, and worship leader, is one of the pioneers of contemporary Christian music. He was co-founder and lead singer of the group LoveSong from it’s beginning to the present. Born in Los Angeles, and raised in both Southern and Northern California, Chuck began playing music at an early age. In his teens, he formed a group called the Castells, which had two national top 20 hits, “Sacred” and “So This Is Love”. They also released the song “I Do”, which was produced by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. It was during this time as a teenager that Chuck shared the stage with stars such as Roy Orbison, Jan and Dean, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobby Vee, Jackie Wilson, Brenda Lee and others. This led to a successful career as a studio singer and musician which included singing the lead vocals on the Hondells first two albums and their biggest hit, “Little Honda”. Chuck and his wife make their home in Nashville Tennessee.



Jay Truax

In the late ‘60s, Jay compiled an impressive rock ‘n roll résumé playing with bands that figured prominently in the music scene. He formed a band, Spirit of Creation, with friend John Mehler, and they opened for major acts such as The Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Credence Clearwater Revival, and Iron Butterfly. Jay became restless and decided to move to Hawaii in hopes of finding “paradise.” Disappointed, he returned, realizing that something was lacking in his life. In search of that “something”, Jay found himself living with Chuck Girard, Fred Field, and Tommy Coomes. He later co-founded the Christian rock band, LoveSong. They recorded three albums and toured the US and the Philippines. LoveSong was one of the first bands of the contemporary Christian genre and the chief model for others that followed. Jay lives in Newport Beach, CA.



Bob Wall

Born August 12, 1948 Burbank California

Bob grew up in semi-rural Tujunga, California, on the outskirts of Los Angeles. He fell in love with guitar music at an early age and founded several rock bands in the mid-1960’s, including three bands that were signed to recording contracts.

Then he met Jesus, Freddie Piro, and LoveSong, in that order.



Tommy Coomes

In the 1970s, Tommy was a member of the pioneering CCM group, LoveSong. He launched Maranatha! Music label’s creative department and produced hundreds of recordings, including the popular Praise album series. In 1989, he founded The Praise Band to explore new forms of worship and evangelism with Greg Laurie, which led to working with Franklin Graham and developing the music teams for Promise Keepers. The Tommy Coomes Band (www.TommyCoomesBand.com) has recorded 15 albums. Using a mix of worship and evangelism, they minister with Franklin Graham and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association from the stadiums of North America to the barrios of El Salvador. Tommy resides in Nashville Tennessee.



John Mehler

John was born and raised in Southern California. John’s home was always filled with music, and music was enculturated in John’s heart and soul before he could walk. John met Jesus of Nazareth the summer of 1968. This encounter with the King of Kings radically changed everything in John’s life.

Just prior to joining Love Song, he formed a band, Spirit of Creation, with friends Jay Truax and Chuck Fraher. This trio opened rock shows for the biggest groups of the day… Three Dog Night, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Spirit, The Grateful Dead and many others. In the summer of 1970, he joined Love Song. John and his family live in Sweden.


